Annual Students Day
The Moles' Education Committee has hosted an Annual Students Day since 1962, a widely popular event offered to Junior-year students attending participating colleges, universities, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and U.S. Military Academy.
Currently offered in October, the pre-visit overview presentation and tour to an active work site for an "open air walking classroom" is a unique opportunity for students to see first-hand a complicated, heavy construction job. The day begins with a continental breakfast and a briefing of the project. Equipped with required PPE – hard hats, safety vests, goggles and gloves all generously donated by Moles members' firms – Students are escorted to the site with guides and Moles member volunteers eager to share their knowledge and enthusiastically promote the Heavy Construction Industry. Tour complete, students return to the mustering site for a boxed lunch.
This undertaking, which in recent years routinely involves approximately 400 students, faculty and volunteers converging on a site, is truly the culmination of dedicated planning between the Committee, contractor hosts and project owners. Based on the success of the inaugural New England-area Students Day in Spring 2019, The Education Committee has decided to further expand its outreach to the Washington, D.C. area and is in the planning stages of adding one to the Midwestern states.
